Fez Medina
California & Fez, Morocco

Lori Wood, Founder of Fez Medina, has an extensive background in the field of artist residency programs and social entrepreneurship.  Lori directed the Villa Montalvo Artist Residency Program in California from 1991-1995.  She spent two years on the boards of both the Alliance of Artists Communities and Res Artis: The International Network of Residential Arts Centres.  During part of this

period she was based in Fez, where she studied Arabic at the Arabic Language Institute.  Sometimes from the edge of the Sahara desert and sometimes from the traditional Arab house she was renovating in the twelfth-century souks of Fez, she was in almost daily internet contact with colleagues in Germany, Ireland, India, the United States, France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Italy, and Cyprus.  Lori holds a BA in Literature from Harvard College, an MBA from The Wharton School and a Masters in International Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. In the future, she plans to create a network of artist residency programs in countries such as Morocco and VietNam. Lori’s US base is in Royal Oaks, California, where she lives with her husband of five years, Hassan Hmadou, who was born and raised in the medina of Fez.
